Today I am interviewing Joy Bowser.
Joy, please tell me a little about yourself. Where are you located? I live in Liberty Center, OH. A small rural community about 30 miles from Toledo, in Northwest corner of OH
When did your first book come out? First edition came out in 2009
What is/are the title(s)? A WIFE AND A WITNESS
What core message does the book tell? A WIFE AND A WITNESS give Biblical application to different areas of our marriages to show agape love to our husbands and improve our walk in our marriage. Although written to an unequally yoked wife in a marriage situation, the application can improve any marriage.
What inspired you to begin writing? I struggled in the early years of our marriage, especially after my husband became saved, in figuring out what God expected out of me as a wife. I was in a transitional period of being the saved spouse in an unequal relationship that needed to even things out- and was unsure of how to make the switch. There were no other books on the market. I journaled, researched and studied for about 6-7 years, looking to the Bible for Godly wisdom.
Who encouraged you the most to get that book out? In 1998 a woman in our church who had been unequally yoked for 24 of her 30 year marriage gave her testimony of her husband coming to salvation while his wife chaperoned our church kids at a summer camp event. When she said, “No one knows what it is like to pray for something for so long…” I was struck with the fact that there are a lot of people that struggle with the same issue. I went home that day, dug out my old journals, lessons and research. I began a ministry that God had in store for me since before I met my husband.
What is your favorite, non-book related activity? I enjoy genealogy and history.
Where is the oddest place/event you have sold your book? I think maybe out of the trunk of my car, randomly behind the town library. I felt kind of like if the cops drove by right then, they would think something else was “going down.”
What makes you laugh? My husband and family, especially the eight grands, we all share a weird kind of humor and we can laugh at the oddest times at the oddest things.
What makes you cry? The world we live in today, people dying early, unexpected deaths without knowing the Savior who could have lifted them from the bondage of addiction, mental illness, loneliness, bitterness. We need to more and more to share the good news. There is NOTHING in this world that is going to free them or give them any hope for today, tomorrow or eternity. The church need to step up and out! Soon!
What do you want people to know about you from this interview? We are real… this started out as “my thing” but once the book was published, it became “our thing.” A WIFE AND A WITNESS is here to help couple avoid making the mistakes that we did. If it helps just on couple- it is worth every pain and heart-ache that we have lived through and shared in the book.
